Call to Photographers- April Show

Call To photographers! Get ready for our upcoming Pinhole Exhibition!

April 29 is
Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, and we are planning an exhibit to run from April 4-29. The Vernissage will be April 6, from 7-10 pm. To assist those who want to participate, but have not done pinhole images before, we are holding a workshop on March 4 to introduce the many options for creating and using a pinhole camera.

Choose any subject you like! Your work may be any size you would like as long as it will fit within a maximum width of three feet and maximum height of four feet (3 x 4’). A small grouping of images, a single large one, diptychs and triptychs are all acceptable. In keeping with the spirit of Pinhole Photography Day we would encourage you to use traditional methods of producing your work. You may choose to capture your image directly to photographic paper, or to film. If captured on film, you might produce a “classic” print in the darkroom (or at your local photo lab)or scan your film and produce a digital print. If these means aren’t available to you, you might wish to try a pinhole image captured digitally, for example by using a body cap with a small aperture in it on your DSLR. More details on these methods may be seen below.

To help us plan, please send us jpgs of maximum 1MB size by March 10, 2012 for our review. If your work is on film, or paper you can make jpgs by scanning or digitally photographing your image. Final images for exhibition must be delivered to the gallery by April 1, 2012 for inclusion in the show.

Your work must be properly mounted and presented. You can do this yourself, or take advantage of our services in mounting, matting, and custom framing your work at a discounted cost. We also have pre-made frames available in various sizes for sale in the gallery.

Details on Pinhole Methods

Making a Digital Pinhole Camera

If you search online you’ll find companies that sell or can make a pinhole lens for your camera, but you can also make one at home quite easily.

- Drill a hole about the diameter of a pencil in the centre of a spare body cap that fits your camera. The body cap is the piece you put over the lens housing when you don’t have a lens on the camera. Drill from the inside of the cap so the logo imprinted on the cap doesn’t throw off the drill bit.

- Sand down the rough edges created by the drill with fine sandpaper.

- Cut a piece of aluminum from a soda can with tin snips. A 1 inch square works fine.

- Gently push a sewing needle through the centre of the aluminum. If you have trouble puncturing the metal, tap it lightly, but stop as soon as the tip of the needle penetrates the aluminum. You want the tiniest hole possible.

- Sand both sides of the aluminum strip with fin sandpaper until you’ve smoothed the lip created where the needle pushed through.

- Tape the piece of aluminum to the inside of the camera body cover with electrical tape. Create a good seal on all four sides of the aluminum so light gets in only through the pinhole. Make sure the pinhole is in the centre of the hole you drilled in the camera body cover. Attach the modified body to your camera’s body to start taking photos.

Collective Mysteries

Collective Mysteries, Group Show by Jake Morrison, Reena Kokotailo, Richard Austin
Dates: January 4-29, 2012
Vernissage: January 13, 7-10pm

Ottawa photographers Richard Austin, Reena Kokotailo and Jake Morrison explore different approaches to nature and landscape photography which share elements of mystery and surreality. Richard Austin dramatically captures brooding skies and ethereal scenes in nature through his pinhole photography, while Jake Morrison explores the notion of a-symmetry in organic landscapes through use of a reflective treatment to his images. Reena Kokotailo’s images of ferns are beautifully printed, and reveal the minute details of nature’s intricate design.
