The Vernissage will be April 6, from 7-10 pm. To assist those who want to participate, but have not done pinhole images before, we are holding a workshop on March 4 to introduce the many options for creating and using a pinhole camera.

Choose any subject you like! Your work may be any size you would like as long as it will fit within a maximum width of three feet and maximum height of four feet (3 x 4’). A small grouping of images, a single large one, diptychs and triptychs are all acceptable. In keeping with the spirit of Pinhole Photography Day we would encourage you to use traditional methods of producing your work. You may choose to capture your image directly to photographic paper, or to film. If captured on film, you might produce a “classic” print in the darkroom (or at your local photo lab)or scan your film and produce a digital print. If these means aren’t available to you, you might wish to try a pinhole image captured digitally, for example by using a body cap with a small aperture in it on your DSLR. More details on these methods may be seen below.

To help us plan, please send us jpgs of maximum 1MB size by March 10, 2012 for our review. If your work is on film, or paper you can make jpgs by scanning or digitally photographing your image. Final images for exhibition must be delivered to the gallery by April 1, 2012 for inclusion in the show.

Your work must be properly mounted and presented. You can do this yourself, or take advantage of our services in mounting, matting, and custom framing your work at a discounted cost. The body cap is the piece you put over the lens housing when you don’t have a lens on the camera. Drill from the inside of the cap so the logo imprinted on the cap doesn’t throw off the drill bit.

- Sand down the rough edges created by the drill with fine sandpaper.

- Cut a piece of aluminum from a soda can with tin snips. A 1 inch square works fine.

- Gently push a sewing needle through the centre of the aluminum. If you have trouble puncturing the metal, tap it lightly, but stop as soon as the tip of the needle penetrates the aluminum. You want the tiniest hole possible.

- Sand both sides of the aluminum strip with fin sandpaper until you’ve smoothed the lip created where the needle pushed through.

- Tape the piece of aluminum to the inside of the camera body cover with electrical tape. Create a good seal on all four sides of the aluminum so light gets in only through the pinhole. Make sure the pinhole is in the centre of the hole you drilled in the camera body cover. Attach the modified body to your camera’s body to start taking photos.

Check out this website! http://www.pinholeday.org

Otherwise, come to our workshop! Images that are slightly over or under-exposued can be fixed with basic photo editing software, but when there are areas in the photo that are very dark or very light, the details are often just not there to bring out. You can spend hours trying to fix a photo on your computer, so it's best to learn how to avoid these finds of problems in the first place.

First, it's important to understand what is taking place inside the camera to cause problems with exposure. When shooting outdoors on an automatic setting, the camera is averaging out the light in the entire frame to calculate a suitable exposure. This can work well in evenly lit settings, but outdoors on a bright sunny day, there can be so much light that it throws off the camera and causes it to choose a much faster shutter speed than is suitable for the subject. This usually results in the sky and background looking great, but peoples' faces are dark and when brightened in an editing program, can look grainy. This is because the exposure was not long enough for the camera to pick up the details of the subject in the foreground.

However, by simply increasing the exposure, you can end up with a properly exposed subject but an overexposed sky - bright white without any detail.

To avoid either of these situations, you can choose to use a fill flash. This will allow you to capture the details of your subject's face without overexposing the brighter areas of the frame. It will also even out the strong shadows across the subject's face from direct sunlight.

If you have an automatic camera and have no control over the exposure, it's easiest to photograph outdoors on overcast days when there is not as much contrast and the sun is not as bright. But since that's not really a solution, you can get creative: carry a small reflector (or just a white piece paper) with you and try to illuminate your subject's face by aiming the reflection towards the darker areas of their face. Another option is to avoid setting up your subject against a bright backdrop like the sky; photograph against more neutral tones or out of direct light.

Fall is a great time to photograph outdoors; overcast days and the rich colours of the changing leaves make a great backdrop for your subject. So make the most of the cooperative weather and experiment with your camera! Let us know how you do - send us your best fall photos!

Q&A: RAW files

Question: My DSLR camera has the option to shoot in "RAW." What exactly is RAW and how does it differ from JPEG?

Answer: Sometimes referred to as a "digital negative," RAW files contain all of the digital information required to produce the image which has not yet been altered by the camera's firmware or your computer's software. They are unprocessed, unlike a JPEG, which has been compressed to be compatible with basic editing software and to be a manageable size. Typically, RAW files hold the full range of tone, colour, detail and contrast captured by your camera. Photos from RAW are quite large compared to JPEGs and the photographer will need to use a program like Photoshop or Lightroom to open and edit the image. Camera manufacturers will usually bundle their own software utility to work with their particular RAW file format.

JPEG is a standard format that is readable by any image program and is easily transferable to most other forms of media, such as printing or posting on the web. It is a compressed file format and quite a bit smaller than RAW. When a JPEG file is created, it is converted through an algorithm that sharpens the image so JPEGs are usually sharper initially, though RAW typically has greater detail.

When comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the two, the photographer who enjoys the greater degree of control provided by RAW processing software will often chose to shoot in RAW. When the files are loaded, one is able to adjust exposure, contrast, white balance and saturation in a lossless environment. JPEG is more suitable for images that may not need these types of adjustment after downloading. JPEGs are not lossless files, so every time the file is saved, it will lose a small amount of information. Another thing to consider is the amount of space you have to save your files to; even the largest external hard drive can be filled rather quickly with RAW files if one takes a lot of photographs on an ongoing basis.

So next time you shoot, consider the following advantages of shooting in RAW:

Your original files will be safe from being altered because any changes to the file cannot be resaved over the RAW files; you will be asked to choose to save a copy of the edited image as either a TIFF or a JPEG.

You will not be limiting the possibilities for the file. By taking photographs on a low JPEG setting, you have already limited yourself as to how much you will be able to enlarge the print without pixelation as well as the colour range available. By shooting RAW, you're taking advantage of the full file size and colour range your camera has to offer.

You have full control over the images. You're not allowing the camera to make decisions for you like auto sharpening and noise reduction which can sometimes cause undesired effects.

You can choose the colour space (SRGB, Adobe RGB) that suits your workflow, editing and printing equipment.

Still unsure of which mode to choose? Many cameras allow you to shoot in both JPEG and RAW simultaneously - use the RAW file for editing and the JPEG to share with others immediately!

Call to Photographers

arts&architecture is sending out a call for photographers to submit photographs for an upcoming exhibit titledWinter Poems.
We invite photographers to send us their interpretations of winter for consideration in a group show scheduled for the month of December.
How to submit:
Send an email to info@artsandarchitecture.ca before the deadline of Friday, November 18th and include:
- your name;
- up to three image entries in jpg format, each under 1MB;
- each file should be titled to include the name of the image and your full name
We will contact photographers by Wednesday, November 23. Photographers will need to bring their selected prints to the gallery, either framed or matted to no larger than16x20 and no later than Sunday, November 27 at 5:00pm. The gallery will offer black, 16x20 frames for display purposes for unframed prints. The group generally gathers once a year to photograph together in a workshop format, sharing triumphs and failures but always moving toward their individual goals while celebrating the synergy between the body, the soul, and the natural world. Cape Cod, Maine, Prince Edward Island and now Wakefield, Quebec, have presented the living context for their art.

The nude in nature includes 28 fine art images, both colour and black and white. To those who were following our old blog, thanks for making the switch, we promise to make it worth the visit!

Our old blog had really only functioned as a means to announce our upcoming events but we wanted to offer our readers more. Our new blog will have much more content and we hope for it to become a resource for art lovers, budding photographers and established photographers alike!

We’ll be posting regularly to offer our readers special articles on photographers (mainly local, from the Ottawa-area), camera profiles and photography lessons as well as information regarding our upcoming events at the gallery. Why the move to a new blog? This blog is incorporated right into our website, making it easier for us to update and format the way we like.

Len Ward, architect, photographer and the owner of arts&architecture, will be writing regular entries talking about cameras (many of them featured in the glass cabinets at the gallery) as well as explaining how photography works to give readers a better understanding of their camera and how to achieve great results.

Another one of our new blog features will be a Q&A each month for all things photography-related. If you have any questions about how to use your camera, how to take a particular type of photograph or how you can revive old photographs or slides, please send us an email and we will aim to answer it in a future post!

We have also started a newsletter that will be sent out monthly; consider signing up for regular updates straight to your inbox and for monthly vouchers that can be applied in-store on framing orders.

We hope you'll stop by to visit not only on our site, but also at our gallery location, at 1181 Bank Street, Ottawa.
